Simonyceras was named by Wiedmann (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Ammonites simonyi.

It was assigned to Ussuritidae by Tozer (1981); to Phylloceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Monophyllitinae by Wiedmann (1970) and Lukeneder and Lukeneder (2014).
