Acrioceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-u K Apti-l]. Its type is Ancyloceras tabarelli.

It was reranked as Ancyloceras (Acrioceras) by Jeletzky (1964).

It was assigned to Ancyloceras by Jeletzky (1964); to Ancyloceratinae by Klinger and Kennedy (1992); and to Ammonoidea by Imlay (1960) and Sepkoski (2002).
