Taxonomy
Protexanites thompsoni was named by Jones (1966). Its type specimen is USNM 132930a, a shell, and it is a mold. Its type locality is USGS Loc. M2316, Putah Creek [Funks Fm], which is in a Coniacian marine shale in the Funks Formation of California.
