Taxonomy
Cathartes fossilis was named by Moreno and Mercerat (1891). Its type specimen is Museo de La Plata, a limb element, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lujan, which is in a Lujanian terrestrial horizon in the Lujan Formation of Argentina.
