Taxonomy
Vacunellidae was named by Astafieva-Urbajtis (1973). Its type is Vacunella.

It was reranked as the subfamily Vacunellinae by Morris et al. (1991) and Bouchet et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Sanguinolitidae by Morris et al. (1991) and Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Pleuromyoidea by Carter et al. (2011).
