Spirifer grewingki was named by Netschajew (1911).

It was recombined as Licharewia grewingki by Kashirtsev (1959), Ustritsky and Chernyak (1963), Lee and Gu (1980), Kalashnikov (1998) and Tazawa et al. (2001).
