Bornhardticeras was named by Böhm and Riedel (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: K Nc]. Its type is Placenticeras discoidale.

It was assigned to Streblitinae by Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
