Stegotheridae was named by Ameghino (1889). Its type is Stegotherium.

It was reranked as the tribe Stegotheriini by McKenna and Bell (1997), Rincón et al. (2008) and Carlini et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Peltateloidea by Ameghino (1889); to Peltateloidea by Ameghino (1891); to Peltateloidea by Ameghino (1894); to Dasypoda by Ameghino (1902); and to Dasypodinae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Rincón et al. (2008) and Carlini et al. (2010).
