It was synonymized objectively with Stegotheriini by McKenna and Bell (1997); it was reranked as the tribe Astegotheriini by Vizcaíno (1994), Rincón et al. (2008) and Carlini et al. (2010).
It was assigned to Dasypodinae by Vizcaíno (1994), Rincón et al. (2008) and Carlini et al. (2010).
