Taxonomy
Brancoceras was named by Steinmann (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l K Albi-m]. Its type is Ammonites senequieri. It is the type genus of Brancoceratidae, Brancoceratinae.

It was replaced with Hystatoceras by Hyatt (1900).

It was assigned to Dipoloceratidae by Benavides-Caceres (1956); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Mojsisovicziinae by Bulot et al. (2005); and to Brancoceratinae by Kennedy (2004) and Szives (2007).
