Kionoceras decorahense was named by Flower (1952). Its type specimen is a specimen in the NYSM, a shell, and it is a cast. Its type locality is Decorah, which is in a Blackriveran/Kirkfieldian deep subtidal shelf claystone/limestone in the Decorah shale Formation of Iowa.
