Dentalium herculeum was named by de Koninck (1863).

It was recombined as Entalis herculea by Waagen (1880); it was recombined as Plagioglypta herculeum by Hayasaka (1925); it was recombined as Plagioglypta herculea by Reed (1944) and Waterhouse (1980); it was recombined as Minodentalium herculeum by Asato and Kase (2021).
