Orthoceras politum was named by M'Coy (1851). It is not extant. Its type specimen is SM A33416 (lectotype), a shell. Its type locality is Penwhapple, which is in a Caradocian marine sandstone in the Ardwell Farm Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Virgoceras politum by Evans (1994).
