Productus compressus was named by Waagen (1884).

It was recombined as Productus (Striatifera) compressus by Licharew (1937); it was recombined as Productus (Striatifera) compressa by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Compressoproductus compressa by Zhang and Jin (1961) and Wang et al. (1982); it was recombined as Compressoproductus compressus by Licharew and Kotlyar (1978), Jin and Hu (1978), Zhan (1979), Liang (1990) and Zeng et al. (1995).
