Callotaria was named by Palmer (1892). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Callorhinus by Trouessart (1898); it was reranked as Arctocephalus (Callotaria) by Trouessart (1904).

It was assigned to Otariidae by Palmer (1904); and to Arctocephalus by Trouessart (1904).
