Taxonomy
Cleoniceras was named by Parona and Bonarelli (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l K Albi-m]. It is the type genus of Cleoniceratinae.

It was assigned to Hoplitidae by Kennedy et al. (1980); to Cleoniceratinae by Wright (1952), Jeletzky (1980), Kennedy et al. (1981) and Alabushev (1995); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cleoniceratidae by Szives (2007).
