Coahuilites was named by Böse (1928) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-l Sepkoski's reference number: 971].

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Böse (1928); to Sphenodiscinae by Wright et al. (1996); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sphenodiscidae by Kennedy et al. (1996) and Landman and Cobban (2003).
