Cochlocrioceras was named by Spath (1950) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-u]. Its type is Cochlocrioceras turriculatum.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protancyloceratidae by Klein et al. (2007).
