Venus latilirata was named by Conrad (1841).

It was recombined as Chione latilirata by Glenn (1904); it was recombined as Chione (Lirophora) latilirata by Weisbord (1929) and Anderson (1929); it was recombined as Venus (Chione) latilirata by Barrios (1960); it was recombined as Lirophora latilirata by Ward (1992) and Ward (1998); it was recombined as Lirophora (Lirophora) latilirata by Hendy et al. (2008).
