Delphinites was named by Sayn (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala]. Its type is Delphinites ritteri.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Platylenticeratinae by Alsen and Rawson (2005) and Alsen (2006).
