Dichotomites was named by Koenen (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala-u]. Its type is Ammonites bidichotomus.

It was reranked as Polyptychites (Dichotomites) by Bogomolov (1989).

It was assigned to Polyptychites by Bogomolov (1989); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Polyptychitinae by Alsen (2006).
