Prosopon (Pithonoton) marginatum was named by von Meyer (1842). It is not extant. It is the type species of Pithonoton.
It was recombined as Pithonoton marginatum by Patrulius (1966), Muţiu and Bădăluţă (1971), Garassino et al. (2005), De Angeli and Garassino (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2012).
