Discoscaphites was named by Meek (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 971,1107]. Its type is Ammonites coelonotus.

It was reranked as Scaphites (Discoscaphites) by Birkelund (1965).

It was assigned to Scaphites by Birkelund (1965); to Scaphitinae by Landman and Waage (1993) and Kennedy et al. (1997); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
