Taxonomy
Nautilus freieslebeni was named by Geinitz (1843) [Sometimes listed as Geinitz (1841) but the species name freieslebeni was not used in that publication. Geinitz (1843) uses the name in a table but without illustration or description.]. It is the type species of Peripetoceras.

It was recombined as Peripetoceras frieslebeni by Hyatt (1894); it was recombined as Peripetoceras freieslebeni by Kummel (1963), Hollingworth and Pettigrew (1988) and Diedrich (2009).
