Distoloceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala-u K Haut-l]. Its type is Ammonites hystrix.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Endemoceratinae by Klein (2005); and to Neocomitinae by Zell et al. (2015).
