Ectocentrites was named by Canavari (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett-u J Sine-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Ammonites petersi.
It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ectocentritinae by Wiedmann (1970), Meister and Friebe (2003), Geczy and Meister (2007), Blau et al. (2008) and Hoffmann (2010).
