Ellipsoceras was named by Collignon (1950) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u]. Its type is Ellipsoceras expansum.

It was reranked as Myloceras (Ellipsoceras) by Klein et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Myloceras by Klein et al. (2007).
