Taxonomy
Archegosauroidea was named by von Meyer (1857) [nom. transl. ex Archegosauridae von Meyer 1857]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Yates and Warren (2000).

It was assigned to Temnospondyli by Gubin (1997); to Temnospondyli by Shishkin et al. (2000); and to Stereospondylomorpha by Yates and Warren (2000).

Y. M. Gubin 1997"Skull triangular with concave lateral margins; preorbital elongation moderate to strong; the index of skull elongation (Sl/mSw) more than 1.5. Septomaxilla usually without expansion on the dorsal skull roof. Premaxilla contact with maxilla well in front of choana. Nasal-maxillary suture present. Lachrymal excluded from both orbital and narial margins. Sensory grooves poorly developed or absent. Choanae narrow. Anterior palatal vacuities usually present. Pterygoid contacts vomer. Pterygoid flange reduced in early Tatarian forms. Parasphenoid plate with paired muscular pockets. Shagreen fields or rows on pterygoid and vomer; small oval shagreen field at base of cultriformis process of parasphenoid. Palatine - ectopterygoid tooth row present, no ectopterygoid tusks. Vomerine tusks aligned anteroposteriorly."
