Monitoceras was named by Ruzhentsev and Bogoslovskaya (1978). Its type is Gastrioceras karpinskii.

It was reranked as Cancelloceras (Monitoceras) by Furnish et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Gastrioceratidae by Ruzhentsev and Bogoslovskaya (1978) and Korn (2006); and to Cancelloceras by Furnish et al. (2009).
