Hyattoceratinae was named by Miller and Furnish (1957).

It was reranked as the family Hyattoceratidae by Leonova (2002) and Furnish et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Cyclolobaceae by Leonova (2002); to Vidrioceratidae by Bogoslovskaya (1990) and Korn (2006); and to Marathonitoidea by Furnish et al. (2009).
