Taxonomy
Cyrtoceras kirbyi was named by Whitfield (1889). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Division B Beds, below the lower "Ophileta beds", Section northeast of Shoreham, which is in a Stairsian carbonate limestone/dolomite in the Fort Ann Formation of Vermont.

It was recombined as Ooceras kirbyi by Ruedemann (1906); it was recombined as Bassleroceras kirbyi by Ulrich et al. (1944) and Kröger and Landing (2009).
