Madrepora elephantotus was named by Pallas (1766). It is extant.

It was recombined as Mycedium elephantotus by Oken (1815).

Synonyms
  • Phyllastraea tubifex was named by Dana (1846).

    It was recombined as Mycedium tubifex by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1860); it was synonymized subjectively with Mycedium elephantotus by Kiessling (2014).
