Strobeus shigetai was named by Kaim (2009). Its type specimen is NSM PM23308 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Abrek Bay AB1013, which is in a Dienerian submarine fan mudstone in the Zhitkov Formation of the Russian Federation.
