Cancer (Astacus) subterraneus was named by Montague (1808). It is extant.

It was recombined as Callianassa subterraneus by Whetstone and Collins (1982) and Todd and Collins (2005); it was recombined as Callianassa subterranea by De Angeli et al. (2009) and Schweitzer et al. (2010).
