Thecosmilia suttonensis was named by Duncan (1867).

It was recombined as Phacelostylophyllum suttonensis by Prinz (1991); it was recombined as Phacelepismilia suttonensis by Simms et al. (2002); it was recombined as Phacelophyllia suttonensis by Kiessling et al. (2009).
