Petalorhynchus was named by Newberry and Worthen (1866). It is not extant. Its type is Petalodus psittacinus.
It was assigned to Petalodontidae by Waagen (1879), Woodward (1889) and Hay (1902); to Janassidae by Jordan (1963); to Petalodontida by Zangerl (1981); and to Pristodontidae by Lund (1989), Dalla Vecchia (2000) and Ginter et al. (2010).
