Heterotissotia was named by Peron (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-u K Coni]. Its type is Heterotissotia neoceratites.

It was assigned to Hemitissotiinae by Parnes (1964); to Tissotiidae by Benavides-Caceres (1956) and Chancellor et al. (1994); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
