Taxonomy
Chaohusaurus was named by Young and Dong (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Chaohusaurus geishanensis.

It was assigned to Omphalosauridae by Carroll (1988); to Grippidia by Motani (1999); to Ichthyosauria by Sepkoski (2002); to Grippiidae by Maisch and Matzke (2000), McGowan and Motani (2003) and Maisch (2010); and to Ichthyopterygia by Motani et al. (2015) and Ji et al. (2016).
