Chelonohelcon was named by Brues (1933). Its type is Chelonohelcon mirabundus. It is the type genus of Chelonohelconini.

It was assigned to Braconidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Chelonohelconini by Tobias (1987) and Belokobylskij (2014).
