Diospilus was named by Haliday (1833). It is extant. It is the type genus of Diospiloidae.
It was assigned to Diospilinae by Brues (1937); to Braconidae by Cockerell (1921), Theobald (1937) and Carpenter (1992); to Diospilini by Mason (1976) and Sharanowski et al. (2011); and to Helconinae by Brues (1910) and Belokobylskij (2014).
