Helcon was named by Nees (1814). It is extant. It is the type genus of Helconoidae, Helconini.

It was assigned to Braconidae by Carpenter (1992); to Helconinae by Sharanowski et al. (2011) and Belokobylskij (2014); and to Helconini by Yin et al. (2017).
