Lapillopsis was named by Warren and Hutchinson (1990). It is the type genus of Lapillopsidae.
It was assigned to Micropholidae by Warren and Hutchinson (1990); to Lapillopsidae by Yates (1999) and Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Stereospondyli by Yates and Warren (2000).
