Metriomphalus broesamleni was named by Gründel (2003). Its type specimen is SMNS 29157, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ostdorf, which is in an Angulata coastal sandstone in the Angulatensandstein Formation of Germany.
