Taxonomy
Mastodonsaurus was named by Jaeger (1828). It is the type genus of Mastodonsauridae, Mastodonsauroidea. It was considered monophyletic by Schoch (1999).
It was replaced with Labyrinthodon by Owen (1842) and Owen (1861); it was reranked as Labyrinthodon (Mastodonsaurus) by Owen (1859); it was considered a nomen vanum by Welles and Cosgriff (1965).
It was assigned to Labyrinthodontes by Meyer (1845); to Labyrinthodontidae by d'Orbigny (1849); to Labyrinthodon by Owen (1859); to Capitosauroidea by Yates and Warren (2000); to Mastodonsauridae by Hay (1902), Watson (1919), Kuhn (1971), Carroll (1988), Schoch (1999), Damiani (2001) and Moser and Schoch (2007); and to Capitosauroidea by Schoch (2013).
