Protoibalia was named by Brues (1910). It is not extant. Its type is Protoibalia connexiva.
It was assigned to Ibaliinae by Brues (1910); to Ibaliidae by Carpenter (1992) and Liu and Engel (2007); and to Liopteridae by Engel and Liu (2012).
