Heliastrea conoidea was named by Reuss (1871).

It was recombined as Orbicella conoidea by Kühn (1926); it was recombined as Tarbellastraea conoidea by Chevalier (1961); it was recombined as Plesiastrea conoidea by Rus and Popa (2008).
