Astrea reussiana was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1850).

It was recombined as Heliastrea reussiana by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857); it was recombined as Orbicella reussiana by Rozkowska (1932); it was recombined as Tarbellastraea reussiana by Chaix and Saint Martin (2008).
