Taxonomy
Phoca monachus was named by Hermann (1779). It is extant. It is the type species of Monachus.

It was recombined as Pelagocyon monachus by Gloger (1842); it was recombined as Leptonyx monachus by Giebel (1883); it was recombined as Monachus monachus by Gill (1866), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Hendey (1972), Riedman (1990), Koretsky (2001), Deméré et al. (2003), Adam (2004), Werdelin and Peigne (2010), Amson and Muizon (2013), Cullen et al. (2014) and Berta et al. (2018).
