Jouaniceras was named by Basse (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant]. Its type is Lytoceras sicardi.

It was assigned to Jouaniceratidae by Wright (1952); to Nostoceratidae by Kennedy (1995) and Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
