Encyrtus was named by Latreille (1809). It is extant. It is the type genus of Encyrtidae, Encyrtinae.

It was assigned to Encyrtinae by Statz (1938); to Encyrtidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Encyrtinae by Heraty et al. (2013).
